Chapter 3: Your Protector

You had fallen asleep on one of the beds in Rin’s and Sousuke’s room. About an hour later, you woke up to an empty room. You figured that Rin and Sousuke must still be at swim practice, which was fine with you since you still did not have an answer for them. You let out a sigh as you fixed your hair before leaving the room. You headed to the lobby of the hotel, thinking that maybe a small walk would clear your head. As you left the hotel, the wind blew your hair all around. The weather was nice outside expect for the gust of wind every couple of minutes. You slowly made your way down the block to the nearest convenience store. As you walked, another memory appeared in your head.

~Flashback~

It was a nice yet, windy day for the beginning of spring. The fight with Kisumi was a thing of the past since it had happened months ago. Today, your class was going on a field trip to the aquarium. You were very excited to see all the wildlife under the water, but you were not the only one. This was the first time you had seen Haru’s blue eyes shine so bright for anything besides swimming.

“You will be split into groups of six for the scavenger hunt. Each group will have a packet of questions they have to fill out. All the answers can be found within various exhibits at the aquarium. All members of the group need to stay together. No wandering off by yourself,” your teacher said in a firm voice. Kisumi decided to be the brave soul to ask if they could pick partners. Your teacher was not a fan of this method since she was worried someone would feel left out.

“I will let you pick your groups. However, if it causes problems then I will never allow you to pick again,” she said giving into the student’s request. All the students respected their teacher’s wishes and started to form groups. Before you could say a word, Rin and Sousuke both grabbed your hand. “You are with us, (Name),” the boys said together as they give you a big grin. You smiled at them and nodded your head.

(I’m sure you can guess your group) In the end, you ended up being with Rin, Sousuke, Makoto, Haru, and Kisumi. Even though you were in an all boy group, you did not mind. You knew some of the girls thought it was weird that you hung out with the boys so much. However, it just seemed like you got along with them better.

After making your group, your teacher passed out the packets of questions for the scavenger hunt. You were voted the answer writer for the group since you had the best handwriting of the group. Truthfully, you did not want the job, but someone had to do it.

“Okay, what is our first question, (Name)?” Makoto asked as the six of you entered the first exhibit of the aquarium. “Let’s see,” you said as you glanced over the first question. “How many different types of fish are in the ocean?” you read out loud.

“Over here,” Haru called out to the group as he pointed to a sign. Everyone hurried over to read the sign. ‘There are over 32,000 different types of fish in the ocean’. “Great job, Haru,” you said smiling at him before writing down the answer. A slight blush appeared on Haru’s face when he saw your smiling face. “Thanks, (Name),” Haru replied shyly. Sousuke and Rin noticed Haru’s reaction to your smile. They both exchanged looks with each other as jealous grew inside of them.

~Skip Ahead~

Your group had answered almost all the questions in the scavenger hunt packet. “It looks like the last couple of questions have to deal with sharks,” you said skimming them over. “I bet I could answer some of those questions without finding the signs for them,” Rin said as he moved behind you in an attempt to read over your shoulder. He placed a hand on your shoulder as he leaned in. Rin’s face was right next to your face. You could feel your heart starting to race inside of your chest, but thought nothing of it.

“I highly doubt that. Let me see the questions,” Sousuke said as he repeated Rin’s actions on the other side of you. Your heart was now going twice as fast and you could not ignore it any longer. “Here someone else can finish writing down the answer. I need to go to the bathroom,” you said quickly as you pushed the paper into Sousuke’s hand before slipping out of both boys’ grasps.

“(Name), wait up you need someone to go with you,” Makoto shouted not wanting her to go off on her own. “I’ll go,” Haru said before Rin and Sousuke had a chance to say anything. It did not take long for Haru to catch up to you. “What’s wrong?” Haru asked once you were alone with him. “Nothing is wrong. I just need to go to the bathroom,” you answered letting out a nervous laugh. Haru did not say a word. Instead, he gave you a look of ‘I know you’re lying so you better just tell me the truth’.  You bit your bottom lip as you debated telling Haru why you suddenly ran away. You let out a sigh knowing that Haru was not going to let this matter go.

“My heart started to beat really fast when Rin and Sousuke were looking over my shoulder at the scavenger hunt packet. I needed to get some space so that’s why I said I needed to go to the bathroom,” you said telling Haru the truth. He did not say a word as he walked closer to you before wrapping his arms around you to give you a hug. You were quite surprised by the quite boy’s actions, but hugged him back regardless. When he finally pulled away, you noticed that Haru’s eyes shone a bit of sadness in them. Haru realized in that moment that your heart was already taken.

He made a promise to himself to protect you and keep you safe as you figured things out. Haru was going to be the best friend that he could be to you and he knew that was all he could be for you. “Come on, (Name). The others are probably waiting for us,” Haru said giving you a small smile before leading the way back to the others.

When you two return, everyone had drinks in their hands. Sousuke had gotten you your favorite soda while Makoto brought one for Haru. The rest of the afternoon was fun as you explore the aquarium. You even finished the scavenger hunt in time to see the dolphin show. It was quite enjoyable watching the dolphins swim and do tricks. However, your favorite part was watching Makoto hold Haru back since he was determine to jump in the tank with the dolphins.

~Present~

As you left the convenience store with snacks for the whole swim team, you noticed a familiar group walking into the same store. “(Name),” four boys said together to gain your attention. Here the Iwatobi Swim team was also in the area to train. “Hey I didn’t know you guys were going to be here. You could have probably gone and trained with Rin and Sousuke,” you said giving them a smile.

Even though you were smiling, Haru could tell that something was wrong with you. He grabbed your hand and pulled you away from the group without saying a word. Nagisa was yelling for Haru to stop, but Makoto placed a hand on Nagisa’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. I’m sure Haru has a good reason for taking (Name) away,” Makoto explained to the other two boys who had worried looks on their faces.

~Back with you~

“Haru, where are you taking me? I need to get back before Sousuke and Rin return to the hotel and send a search party out looking for me,” you said as you struggled to free your hand from Haru’s grip. However, he was not going to let go until he brought you somewhere to talk. You let out a sigh seeing that Haru was not giving up. You just prayed that Sousuke and Rin did not call in the National Guard looking for you.

After walking for about ten minutes, Haru stopped at the edge of the beach where the tide was coming in. Your feet were getting slightly wet, but you did not care, because you were wearing flip flops. “What happened?” Haru finally asked as he looked into your eyes. You wanted to lie to Haru and tell him that everything was fine and nothing happened. However, you knew the dolphin boy could sense when you were lying. You had no idea how he developed such a skill.

“Everything was fine until I went to see if Rin and Sousuke were settled in their room at the hotel,” you said as you looked down at the sand. You watched as the tide came back and forth hitting your feet. “I could tell they were discussing something important. Before I could leave, they pulled me into the room and asked a question that I didn’t have an answer for,” you said as a blush appeared on your face as you remembered what happened only a few hours ago.

“What question did they ask you?” Haru said narrowing his eyes. He already had a pretty good idea the question, but he wanted to be sure. Haru knew this time was going to come in your life. He was hoping that you would have realized it on your own before Rin and Sousuke brought it up, but it was too late.

“Before they asked their question, they both confess their love for me. How they have loved me since middle school. They wanted me to tell them who I loved more,” you said as tears started to form in your eyes. Haru saw this and wrapped his arms around you to comfort you. “What was your answer?” he asked hating that he had to force the answer out of you.

“I froze. I couldn’t answer them and then Momo and Nitori appeared to let them know the team was waiting. They said they wanted to talk again when they got back. I’m scared, Haru. I’m scared that if I pick one, I will lose the other. It has always been the three of us. I’m worried about what is going to happen,” you confessed to Haru before nuzzling your face against his shirt to wipe off your tears.

“Everything is going to be fine, (Name). You will know the answer when you are ready,” Haru said giving a nice comforting squeeze. You two remained like this for a few more minutes before Haru offered to walk you back to the hotel. You thanked him before you two started to slowly walk back to the hotel in silence.

I'm very proud of this chapter. I think it turned out well. Just so everyone knows Haru will not be coming a love interest in this story. It may be slightly one-sided, but he is your best friend! Haru cares a lot about the reader, but he gave up loving her after seeing how she felt about Rin and Sousuke. I know some of you would love a love square, but I think it will be a bit complicated to write.
