Chapter 10: All Day Date Part II: Robin

You stood on the ledge of one of the taller buildings in Gotham City as a gust of wind blew your hair back from your face. The view in front of you was breathtaking as you watched the lights of the city dance around the darkness of the night. There was a slight chill in the air, but it felt nice against your warm skin. Memories of today were replaying in your head as you waited for Robin to arrive on the roof you were meeting him on.

You were still unsure of what all your visions meant and hoped Robin could help decipher them. From what you could gather, your body was being use to host a woman’s soul as she regained her powers. If this was true, it made sense to why you started to gain the ability to control the darkness about two years ago. However, you did not start having visions until after meeting the Controller. There was the possibility that he had implanted those visions to confuse you and have the team distracted away from his real intentions.

You were too lost in your thoughts to hear Robin arrive on the roof. He took this opportunity to sneak up behind you. Using one hand to cover your eyes while the other wrapped around your waist, he pulled you away from the ledge. Soon you could feel Robin’s chest against your back as he wrapped you up in his arms.

“I will let you go once you tell me why you are spacing out again,” Robin said with a slight chuckle, but there was a hint of worry in his tone. “Normally, a person just has to guess who it is,” you retorted back as you struggled to escape, but Robin had a strong hold on you. “One that’s too easy and two, I know something has been bothering you the last couple of days, Midnight. It’s not good to keep things bottom up inside,” he answered back. “Looks who talking, Mr. Secret Identity. I understand not telling the world who you are, but your teammates should at least know. Why can Kid Flash know your secret and no one else can?” you asked with a bitter tone as you shifted the focus of the conversation from yourself to Robin. You were a bit annoyed that Robin was trying to push you to tell him something you were hiding while he has been hiding a big secret from you for years.

You could tell your words had hit home for Robin as he slowly released you from his hold. He took a few steps back as you turned around. A shiver ran down your spine as the cold air hit your body. You quickly started to miss being in Robin’s arms. “It’s not that easy, Midnight. I want to tell you, I do, but Batman has a strict ‘no tell policy’. If you knew who I was, it would be easy to connect the dots to Batman.  It would be too great of risk if the wrong person found out the truth. The only reason Kid Flash knows who my real identity is, because we knew each other before the Young Justice team started,” Robin said trying to explain why he was keeping his identity a secret. With each word he spoke, Robin looked you directly in the eyes. You could see hurt in his eyes as he pleaded for you to understand why he couldn’t tell you the truth.

After a few moments of silence, you let out a sigh and ran your fingers through your hair. You knew how strict Batman could be and how he expect things to be done a certain way. It could not be easy having him for a mentor. “I get, but know I’m not happy about it. And I better one of the first people you reveal your secret to when you are ready,” you respond causing Robin’s normal smile to appear on his face. “Will do,” he chuckled before changing the focus back on you, “so now that I’m done sharing it is your turn. What has been going on with you lately?”

“Alright, but don’t get mad that I didn’t share with you right away. I had my reasons just like you,” you said starting off. Robin nodded his head in agreement before you continued. “Remember the warehouse Batman wanted Kid Flash, you, and me to do some recons on. After I went inside, I lost the use of my powers. It was strange, because it wasn’t like I was exhausted. I think the Controller was able to prevent my powers from working correctly. After searching the whole warehouse, I entered the office area where I found the Controller. He told me that my real name was Nyx and his was Erebus. He said that I was from a different planet and that he will bring me back once my powers are fully restored. Before Kid Flash and you rescued me, I saw a vision from the past. Not my past, but the past of the soul who is inside of me,” you said trying not to leave out any big details. If anyone could help solve this mystery of what was going on with you, it was Robin. After all he was the apprentice to the greatest detective of all time, Batman.

“What happened in your vision?” Robin asked as he typed away on his holographic computer. He was already running searches for the name ‘Nyx’ and ‘Erebus’ hoping to find more information, but he highly doubt it if they came from another planet.

Before you could speak again, the alert on your communicators went off. You quickly answered the call since Robin seemed busy at the moment doing research. “Midnight, Robin is with you, correct?” asked the voice over the communicator who you could easily identified as Batman. “Yes, we are in Gotham City right now,” you answered back. “The alarm system at a Wayne Tech chemical engineering facility was triggered. I’m busy with a League mission and the two of you are closet to see what is going on. I have sent the address to Robin,” Batman said before cutting off communication.

“It looks like we are going to have to wait to finish our conversation until the mission is over with. Beside a nice, easy mission would be good change of pace,” Robin said as pulled out his grappling hook. He placed his other hand on your back and led you to the ledge. “Hang on tight,” Robin instructed as he wrapped his arm around your waist. You quickly wrapped your arms around Robin’s neck as he used his grappling hook. Within a blink of an eye, Robin and you were on your way to check out this chemical engineering facility. You hoped Robin was right about this being an easy mission.

When the two of you arrived at the location, you were able to get inside through an open window on the third floor of the five floor building. There were a couple of lights on the lower floors that were on, but otherwise it was dark in the building. “I will patch into their security system and see if we can pull up video surveillance to see what happened,” Robin said as he plugged his computer into one of the cameras in the room.

As Robin was working on that, you made your way over to door leading into the hallway. You peered through a small glass window that lead into the hallway. It was empty and dark. Moving to the other side of the window to check out the other side of the hallway, the light in front of the room turned on. You looked quickly at the ceiling to see there was motion sensors for the lights. You took a couple of steps away from the window and within a few seconds the light went off again.

“Midnight, you are going to want to see this,” Robin said calling you back over to him. You hurried over to see what Robin had pulled up on the video feed. When you were close enough, Robin hit played on the video. “This happened shortly after Batman contacted us so about twenty minutes ago,” he explained as you watched the video.

It started off normal enough. You had a view of what looked like a research lab that had different types of chemicals stored there. About thirty seconds into the video, two figures appear in the room. Your eyes widened when you immediately recognized the figures as Sportsmaster and the Controller. It was strange to see this pair working together. The video continued with the Controller walking over to a glass cabinet where some of the chemicals were. He was definitely searching for something in particular as he started to read the labels on the chemical containers. Before you could watch anything else, the feed cut out thanks to Sportsmaster smashing the camera.

“If we are lucky, they are still down there searching for whatever they want. Let’s kick their butts and give them a one way ticket to Belle Reve,” Robin said with a grin on his face. Even though he probably should not be excited for the robbery, it was missions like this that got his adrenaline pumping. You, on the other hand, were a bit more hesitate and unsure especially with the Controller involved. He had already stopped your powers once. Your skills without your powers were way behind Robin’s.

“We should be able to take this air vent to the lab they are in. Hopefully with a sneak attack, we can surprise them and gain the upper hand,” Robin said as he pointed to a vent in the upper corner of the room. “I have already contacted the team. They should probably be here in ten minutes or so,” he added on as he walked over to the vent. Robin placed his hands together and bent down slightly. You knew he wanted to rise you up to remove the vent cover before climbing inside first. After putting your foot in Robin’s hand, he lifted you up in the air with ease. A few seconds later, the vent cover was removed, you were inside, and Robin was hoisting himself up.

“Follow me,” Robin said as he climbed over you to take the lead. You quickly followed after him. You couldn’t help, but noticed that Robin wasn’t using his computer to guide you through the ventilation system like usual. You were quickly pulled from your thoughts as you noticed Robin using hand signals to let you know that you were in the right spot and the two villains were still there.

Robin moved over slightly to one side of the ventilation unit so you could move next to him to see what was happening with Sportsmaster and the Controller. There was just enough space for you to fit next to him.

“Have you found what you need yet? Normally, I don’t mind hanging around and getting some exercise when reinforcements come in to break up our fun, but we do have a timeline you wanted to keep,” Sportmaster said as he peered out the window looking for any signs of someone coming to stop them.

“I would have found what I needed if your planet named name things correctly. But then again, you humans haven’t discover the full extent of this chemicals capabilities yet,” the Controller snapped back as he opened a few more containers of different chemicals.

“Well pretty soon that’s not going to matter for what we have planned for this planet,” Sportmaster said with a chuckle.

You could feel your heart tightened in your chest the moment you saw the Controller. Flashbacks of the warehouse played in your mind along with thoughts of doubt in your capability of stopping him. Once again, Robin pulled you from your thoughts. This time he did by placing his hand on top of yours. Robin stared into your eyes wanting to know if you were ready to surprise these villains. Closing your eyes, you took a depth breathe in to calm your nerves. You knew this wasn’t the time to be afraid, nervous, or doubtful. When you joined the Young Justice team, you made a promise to fight and defend against evil. You knew you couldn’t let your feelings stop you from being a hero. After you opened your eyes a few second later, you nodded your head.

“Here it is and lucky for us this will be more than enough for the first couple of trips,” the Controller said with an evil grin on his face. His grin faded quickly before shifting his eyes towards the vent in the room. “Looks like you are going to be able to exercise after all, Sportmaster. It seems like we have some unwanted guests watching us. Remember what I told you before we left,” the Controller said alerting Sportmaster to Robin’s and your presence.

“Seems like it’s my lucky day,” Sportmaster said as he grabbed a small javelin bomb with his hand before throwing it up at the vent. It landed on the vent cover and rapidly started to beep. Robin instinctively kicked the vent cover off before using his cape to shield you and himself from the blast. Using the smoke for cover, Robin jumped out of the vent before throwing two boomerangs at Sportmaster.

“Midnight, you take Sportsmaster. I will go after the Controller,” Robin said as he landed on the ground. He pivoted around to face the Controller, who was about to escape with a container of mystery chemicals.  Before Robin could launch himself towards the Controller, Sportsmaster swung a pole under Robin’s feet to trip him. “Sorry to ruin your plans, bird boy, but I have strict orders to get rid of you,” he said as he approached Robin twirling his weapon.

“Midnight, go after the Controller. We need to stop him from using those chemicals from whatever they have planned. I’ll catch up with you as soon as I’m done with him,” Robin said with a grin on his face as his way of reassuring you that everything was going to be alright. “I like to see you try, kid,” Sportsmaster said with a laugh as he charged at Robin. Robin quickly pulled out his eskrima sticks to defend himself from Sportsmaster’s attack.

You had jumped out of the vent right after Robin. For a brief moment, you hesitated until you heard Robin’s voice giving you an order to follow. That’s when you remembered that you were a hero and you had a mission to complete. “Don’t worry I can handle this,” you replied back as you hurried out of the room after the Controller.

The Controller did his best to lose you inside of the building, but you were able to use your powers to jump from shadow to shadow against the wall of the hallway making it easy for you to catch up to him. “Enjoy your freedom now before the darkness consumes you,” he said with an evil laugh. As the Controller reached the door and opened it up, a ray of light stopped you in your tracks. As you quickly turned out of your shadow form and into your human form, you did your best to pay attention to which way the Controller went. You saw him turned left out of the building. You quickly followed on foot, but by the time you got out of the building the Controller was out of your sight. You headed left hoping to figure out where the Controller had disappeared to.

As you turned the corner at the end of the building, you suddenly found yourself on the ground. “Ow that hurt. Hey wait a minute I can’t move,” said a familiar voice. You let out a small groan from the pain of hitting the cement sidewalk before opening your eyes to see Kisho from school. It took you a few seconds to realize that you were on top of Kisho’s shadow. “I’m sorry that’s my fault,” you said as you stood up and moved off his shadow. Kisho could feel himself being release from the hold he was in. You could see Kisho’s eyes widened like he just discover something. “Nyx, is that you?” Kisho asked as he moved closer to you staring into your eyes.

You could feel something starting to stir inside of you as Kisho continued to stare at you. Suddenly, a loud crash drew your attention upwards to see both Robin and Sportsmaster falling through a window. Robin pulled out his grappler so he could swing down to the ground. While Sportsmaster was able to stop his fall by grabbing hold of the fire escape attached to the building. “You should get somewhere safe. It’s dangerous here,” you told Kisho before hurrying off after Robin. Since you had no clue where the Controller ran off to, your only hope was to capture Sportsmaster and hoped he would talk or at least Miss Martian could scan his brain for information about their plan.

By the time you caught up to the pair, the rest of your teammates had arrived to help. Artemis already had an arrow drawn at Sportsmaster as Robin knelt behind her trying to catch his breathe. While Sportmaster looked like he barely worked up a sweat.

“What’s going on?” Aqualad asked the second he saw you approaching the group. “Sportsmaster and the Controller stole some type of chemical from Wayne Tech,” you answered. When you had finished speaking, Sportsmaster let out a chuckle.

“Even though I would enjoy teaching all you children a lesson,” he said as he looked directly at Artemis, “I have a strict timeline that needs to be followed if I want to get paid”. When he had finished speaking¸ Sportmaster threw a smoke bomb in the middle of the group. After hitting the ground, the area was filled with smoke within a few seconds. You could hear everyone on the team coughing from the smoke.

By the time Miss Martin used her powers to clear it away, Sportsmaster had disappeared without a trace. “We need to figure out what chemical they took so will can figure out what they are planning,” Kid Flash suggested. “I’m more curious why the Controller wanted you alone with him again,” Robin said looking towards you, “Midnight, please tell us what happened,” Robin finishwd with a worried tone. The rest of the team had a shock look on their face as they looked at you. You turned your focus to the ground before you spoke.

“Enjoy your freedom now before the darkness consumes you is what he said to me,” you answered unable to hide the fear you had in voice. Everyone looked at you with concern. “That’s not going to happen, Midnight. I won’t let that happened to you. None of us are going to let that happen. We are a team and we protect each other,” Robin said breaking the silence. You could feel the fear you had slowly disappearing as Robin spoke. “Thank you, Robin,” you said as a small smile forming on your face. You spent the next hour filling in the team with everything that had happened to you since the Controller appeared.
